Catch from Tonle Sap fishery soars to record 46,007 tonnes

The catch from a stationary trawl fishery on the Tonle Sap River soared to a record 46,007 tonnes in the six months to March, according to data presented to a conference that opened in Phuket Tuesday. The conference, organized by the Mekong River Commission, was told that the catch was up from a revised 6,211 tonnes a year earlier. It was also 342 percent higher than the average catch of the last 17 fishing seasons. The fishery mostly targets Mekong small mud carp, known as trey riel in Khmer, which are used to make prahoc, a fermented fish paste.
